It’s Hot And Imagine This
It is the height of summer, with temperatures well into the triple digits. You’re staying cool inside your house watching your favorite Netflix original when the AC goes out. You unplug the machine in hopes that it will somehow reboot but it doesn’t. It’s just after seven so you hope an Air conditioning repair place is open. You call three businesses- all closed. The fourth name in your google search, a shop picks up the phone. “Yes, we can have a tech out on Friday.”
“Friday?” That’s two days from now. So you ask again “Any chance someone is available sooner?”
“No, all our techs are booked. Sorry,” they say.
As the evening heat starts to set in, you jump in the car in search of fans, so you don’t have to suffer the heat! You google: ‘How to make a DIY temp AC’ and watch tutorials because the fans aren’t cutting it and you are miserable.
Finally, Friday arrives.
You barely slept because of the heat. The repair guy comes out looks at the unit and submits his findings. The motor has burned out. Leaving you to ask the question everyone asks. “How can I prevent this in the future?”
The answer is easy. Replace your air filter.
When an air filter is old and packed with dust, debris, and pet hair, everything on the machine works overtime. The consequences include raising your energy bill, not cooling your house, and tremendous risk damaging the Air Conditioner. The worst-case scenario: Your AC filter could start a fire.
Unfortunately, when your AC goes out, it seems to always be at the most inconvenient times. Trying to track down a business to help you get back up and running can make everything look dire when a simple filter change can prevent the problem in the first place. However, most people, especially new homeowners and renters do struggle with figuring out when to change their filters.
The more you use it the more often you should change it.
Keep your system set at 78 degrees so that you’re not coming home turning it on and trying to cool down the house at 5pm that’s already hot, it actually uses more energy and is not effective as it will be hours before it even cools down.
“When is a good time to change filters?”
Industry professionals recommend changing your filters every 3 months. If you run your system all day you may need to change the filter as often as 2 months. Sacramento starts getting hot around late April – early May. Changing your filter during the second week of April will ensure it is ready for the heat.
Now go change your filter and set a reminder for a 30 day check, If Air can’t get in through it can’t cool down!
